One Star Rooftop Dining

One star may not sound like a big deal, but if it’s a Michelin star then it’s pretty damned good.

OpenTable.com has posted the 2012 list of New York restaurants with Michelin stars.  Of the 49 restaurants only one actually serves meals on a rooftop. Café Boulud, which is located in The Surrey hotel on the upper east side, has received its star for the French-American cuisine of Chef Daniel Boulud.  A seasonal private rooftop garden on the 17th floor of The Surrey features light food from Café Boulud.  The roof garden is open daily from 9 am to 11 pm, with light food and beverage service beginning at 5 pm.

New England Natural Pools

WaterHouse Pools in Massachusetts is a New England company creating natural swimming pools for environmentally aware customers.

Unlike pools that simply use natural landscaping to enhance their design, a natural swimming pool not only frequently has a very organic design, but also uses a combination of filtration through rocks and pebbles in addition to landscaping with aquatic plants in order to clean water without the use of chemicals.

A Little Bit More on Natural Pools

I keep hoping to see that someone has built a natural pool on a rooftop. If you happen to hear of one, please let me know!

Your Own Slice of Rooftop Heaven

I first ran across the add on Craigslist and it took me to Airbnb.

The posting comes with this description:

Right in the heart of the Village, this unique duplex with soaring ceilings and numerous skylights is steps from the West 4th St subway station, close to Washington Square Park, fabulous restaurants and stores. The location couldn’t be better. The roof garden is an oasis in the city — perfect for dinners al fresco and bbqs. Furnished, utilities included (Wireless internet, HBO, 58″ TV).

For a week or a month, you are able to rent your own green oasis above the ground in New York City.

Is Your NY Roof Good for Solar?

Mapping Sun’s Potential to Power New York/The New York Times

Two-thirds of New York City’s rooftops are suitable for solar panels and could jointly generate enough energy to meet half the city’s demand for electricity at peak periods, according to a new, highly detailed interactive map …  Read More…

This NY Times article from June talks about a series of flights over the city last year, by a plane carrying a Lidar lazer system equipped for detecting light and range. Data collected included shape, size and slope of rooftops, and surrounding shade.  There is now a map

on the City University of New York website which can help building owners assess the viability of their rooftops.

Gratitude

Ok – we pass over a few rooftops in this video, but that isn’t why it is on here. It’s on here because it is something everyone should watch before beginning their day. Enjoy.
